I tutor students in their homes and am available weekdays (morning, afternoons,
and evenings.) I am totally dependable and will be there when I say I will. If there are any obstacles to my arriving
on time (which is very rare) I always call and let the client know. I am professional and honest in all my dealings
with students and their parents.
Using a variety of resource materials, I assess my
client's level of ability and customize his/her program to the student's individual needs. No two students
are alike. Each responds differently to instruction. Studies have shown that we learn in several ways: through
visual perception, audio perception, and kinesthetic perception. My goal is to determine my student's major method
of retaining information and use it effectively. This might include flash cards, repetitive writing, verbal quizzing,
discussion, demonstration, games, etc.
I try to make learning enjoyable and fun whenever possible with games
( Bingo, card games, board games) that teach parts of speech, vocabulary, punctuation, literary terms, etc. These have
been especially successful with all levels of students.
Encouragement is a vital aspect to learning and a major reason why individual tutoring is far more
effective than classroom instruction. Having taught in secondary and adult education for 28 years, I understand the
limitations of the classroom. Large class sizes make it nearly impossible for even the best teacher to give individual
encouragement to each student exactly when it is needed. Yet that is precisely what is necessary--to "catch"
the student answering correctly as it occurs. Errors also need to be addressed immediately to provide the necessary
feedback. Corrections should be done in a positive manner, requiring time and patience. Most classroom teachers
simply don't have the time availabe to do this. I do.
